Open plan offices look great on a brochure. In practice, they are loud. And in Dubai, where companies are packing more people into smaller floors to justify premium rents, the noise problem has gotten harder to ignore.
If you have ever tried to take a client call while a colleague three desks away is explaining last quarter’s numbers at full volume, you already know what I am talking about. That particular frustration is not a personality issue or a company culture problem. It is an acoustics problem. And acoustic panels fix it.
The Real Cost of a Noisy Office
There is a straightforward case to make here. A 2023 survey by Leesman found that noise is the single most cited barrier to focus in workplaces globally. Dubai offices are not exempt. If anything, the combination of hard-surface fitouts (concrete, glass, polished stone) and high occupancy densities makes things worse than average.
Sound bounces off hard surfaces. It does not die down on its own. Every conversation, keyboard click, and phone call adds to a growing layer of noise that makes concentration harder and drains energy. Workers do not always identify it as noise. Which Spaces Need Them Most

Open plan floors are the second priority. Long open spaces with high ceilings create what acousticians call flutter echo, where sound bounces horizontally across the room. Ceiling baffles or wall panels on the longer walls address this directly.
Reception areas matter too, especially in client facing businesses. A reception desk surrounded by marble and glass tells visitors they are in a premium building. It also tells them, acoustically, that they are inside a bathroom. A well placed fabric panel or acoustic plaster coat changes that experience completely.
Finally, private offices and focus rooms. There is often an assumption that a closed door solves the noise problem. It helps, but sound transmission through partition walls and above suspended ceilings is a real issue in densely occupied floors. Acoustic linings on those walls make a measurable difference.
Panel Types Worth Knowing About
Fabric wrapped panels are the most common. They use an absorbent core, typically mineral wool or polyester, wrapped in a stretched fabric. They are tunable, meaning you can adjust the thickness to target low, mid, or high frequencies depending on the problem you are solving. They also come in enough colours and sizes to fit most office interiors without looking like an afterthought.
Wooden slat and batten panels do double duty. The wood face adds diffusion, scattering sound in multiple directions, while the absorbent backing handles the rest. They work well in spaces where the aesthetic is a priority, boardrooms and executive floors especially.
Ceiling baffles are panels hung vertically from the ceiling. They are useful when wall space is limited or when you need to treat a large open area without running panels all the way around the perimeter. In a 500 square metre open floor, baffles often deliver faster acoustic improvement per square metre installed than wall panels alone.
Acoustic foam, while effective, tends to be used in recording environments and call centres rather than general offices. Its texture and appearance make it a tougher sell for client facing spaces.
Installation in a Working Office
The most common concern businesses raise is disruption. Acoustic panel installation is less disruptive than most people expect. Fabric panels are generally fixed with adhesive, track systems, or impex clips. Most installations do not require drilling through structural elements. A standard conference room can be done in a day.
The more complex jobs, sprayed acoustic plaster or wood wool ceiling systems, do need more planning. But those projects are usually part of a broader fitout or refurbishment, so the acoustic work gets absorbed into the timeline.
If you are dealing with an occupied floor and cannot shut down, phased installation is an option. Treatment can be applied room by room or zone by zone without taking the whole floor offline.
What to Ask Before Buying
The first question worth asking is whether the provider will conduct an acoustic assessment before recommending products. A room with a 0.8 second reverberation time needs different treatment from one sitting at 1.8 seconds. Panel specifications are not interchangeable, and coverage is not the same thing as performance.
Ask about the NRC rating of any panel you are considering. NRC stands for Noise Reduction Coefficient. A rating of 0.85 means the panel absorbs 85 percent of the sound energy that hits it. Below 0.7 and you are often doing decorative work, not acoustic work.

The Bottom Line for Dubai Businesses
